While Will Grigg conquered Wigan, the chant conquered the world
The song was created by Wigan Athletic supporter Sean Kennedy, and with assistance from professional dj’s, it’s now been transformed into an actual song and has entered the iTunes top 10. All revenues, by ‘DJ Kenno’ will be donated to charity. The chant was initially sung by Stevenage fans about winger Luke Freeman in 2012, while Newcastle United supporters have their own version for Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrović. But the popular lyrics sound perfect with Will Grigg, who has conquered the hearts of Wigan Athletic fans by finishing top scorer of the League One by scoring 25 goals.
Even the opponent’s coach was singing
Wigan players were seen toasting their promotion to the Championship while repeatedly singing the song on the pitch after the club’s final game of the season at home to Barnsley. Even Barnsley’s coach was catched singing the tune when heading back from the DW Stadium. The modest Grigg told Wigan Athletic’s official TV channel after they secured promotion in May 2016 that hearing dans singing the tune spurred him on. “It’s unbelievable, it’s a great feeling, it does give you that extra boost and it’s been the main song for quite a while now,” he said. But it didn’t stop here.
Northern Irish invasion in France
On 8 October 2015 Northern Ireland qualified for the very first time for the European Championship – the 2016 edition. Will Grigg and his squad directly qualified as group winners and were already secured of qualification after the penultimate matchday. And the fans have been great since the day they arrived in Nice, France, for their first game against Poland. While thousands of fans travelled to France, one thing was for sure. The Northern Irish wouldn’t stop singing and ‘Will Grigg’s on Fire’ was their main song. Due to the massive presence of the fans the song turned out to be quite possibly the greatest football chant of all European Championships. The only problem is that 24-year-old national legend hasn’t played a minute in the tournament. This doesn’t withhold the fans from singing though. Will Grigg, despite just a few international call-ups, has become such a cult figure that the devoted fans even wore masks of his face during the game against Ukraine. Planes, trains, bars, squares and stadiums are all on fire. All because of Will Grigg, you absolute legend.
